(KPL)Laos-China cooperation continues to grow(part 1)

(KPL) Laos and China will celebrate the 52nd anniversary of diplomatic ties on 25 April, with high level events expected to be held in the two countries to mark the anniversary.

On this occasion, the KPL News would like to highlight the following historic achievements of friendship relations and cooperation the two countries have recorded over the past decades:

Prior to 1975, the relation and cooperation between Laos and China was in the form of support and assistance for the struggle of Lao ethnic people against foreign imperialists and administration of oppressive class.

With a shared border, the neighbouring China, under the leadership of the Communist Party, stood side by side with Laos providing the latter assistance and supports in both material and spirit in both regional and international stages. The exchange visits between the high ranking officials of the two countries has constantly been made, including the visit to China in 1959 by His Excellency Kaysone Phomvihane, Secretary General of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and other leaders to inform revolutionary movements in Laos and discuss potential assistances from China.

In April 1961, the coalition government led by Prince Souvanaphoumma, Prime Minister visited China and signed an agreement to establish the diplomatic ties with China on April 25, 1961. This is a hi storic landmark of the relation and cooperation between Laos and China.

By the end of September, 1965, a high ranking delegation of the Lao People's Democratic Republic led by H.E Kaysone Phomvihane, Secretary General of the Lao People�s Revolutionary Party paid a 50-day working visit to China to discuss the assistances of China for the Lao revolutionary cause in Laos. Since the announcement of Lao People's Democratic Republic on December 2, 1975, the People�s Republic of China has helped Laos protect its new regime, heal its wound of war, restore and improve the living condition of all Lao ethnic people. The Laos-China Friendship Association was established in February, 1976.

Between March 1976 and June 1977, H.E Kaysone Phomvihane, Secretary General of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and President of the Council of Ministers led a high ranking delegation of the Party and Government of Laos in an official visit to China to express thanks to the Party, Government and people of China for their contributions to Lao revolution and their continuous supports to the cause of national defence and construction of Laos.

In 1989, H.E Kaysone Phomvihane, Secretary General of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and President of the Council of Ministers led a delegation of the Party and government of Laos to pay an official visit to China where both sides signed four cooperative agreements. These included the agreements on consulate, cultural cooperation, temporary agreement on border issues, and visa exception.

During the visit, H.E Kaysone Phomvihane held a working session with Mr. Deng Xiaoping, senior leader of the Communist Party of China (Second Generation leader of the Communist Party of China). This was an important political event and starting point of the friendship relation and cooperation between Laos and China in the new era.

In December 1990, H.E Li Peng, Prime Minister of China led a high ranking delegation of the Communist Party and government of China in an official visit to Laos which was considered by the two countries as a significant contribution to strengthening the friendship relations and cooperation between Laos and China.

In the beginning of 1991, H.E Nouhak Phoumsavanh, President of the Supreme People's Assembly led a high ranking delegation of the Supreme People's Assembly to visit China. In October, 1991, H.E Khamtay Siphandone, Prime Minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic led a delegation of Lao government to visit the People�s Republic of China. in April, 1992, H.E Kaysone Phomvihane, Secretary General of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, and President of the Lao PDR paid a goodwill visit to China. This visit was considered as a noticeable milestone event in the history of relation and cooperation between the two parties, states and peoples of Laos and China.

June 1995 witnessed an official working visit by H.E Nouhak Phoumsavanh, President of the Lao People's Democratic to the People's Republic of China to further enhance the friendship relations and traditional cooperation between the two countries, promote the cooperation on economics, trade and techniques based on mutual benefits. On June 11, 1996, the governments of the two countries signed an agreement on establishing the Laos-China cooperation committee on economics, trade and techniques.

On 25 January, 1999, Mr. Sisavath Keobounphanh, Prime Minister of the Lao PDR paid an official visit to China. During his visit five important cooperation agreements were signed. On 13-16 July, 2000, H.E Khamtay Siphandone, President of the Lao PDR paid an official visit to China. His state visit represented the entering into new era of greater and deeper friendship relation and cooperation between the Lao People's Democratic Republic and the People's Republic of China.
